Diabetes statistics in the United States have been on the rise for several years. Experts believe that the lifestyle and diet of Americans are largely to blame for the rise in diabetes statistics lately. Note that a survey conducted in 2005 shows that about 20.8 million people or roughly 7% of the total population in the country are suffering from this disease. What is more alarming is that many younger people belonging to the 20 years and below bracket are already found to be suffering from this type of disease. The National diabetes statistics show that about 9.6% of the total number of people under the 20 years old and below bracket is suffering from this disease. Moreover, there have been many reported cases of children below 10 years old who are already suffering from this type of disease. Children from American Indians, African Americans, and Hispanic/Latino American families are said to be the ones who are greatly affected by childhood diabetes.
Complications From Diabetes
According to the national diabetes statistics, heart disease and stroke are two of the most common complications resulting from diabetes. About 65% of those people who have diabetes die from heart attack and stroke. Adults who are suffering from diabetes have 2 to 4 times at risk of heart attack and stroke compared to those people who do not have diabetes. If the person who have diabetes has a long family history of heart diseases and stroke, his or her chances of suffering from these diseases is greatly increased.
Aside from heart attack and stroke, blindness has been common reported among patients who are suffering from diabetes. According to diabetes statistics, diabetic retinopathy causes an estimate of 12,000 to 24,000 new cases of blindness in the United States each year. Experts believe that this figure could be more considering that there are many unreported and undiagnosed cases of diabetes and blindness in the country.
Kidney failure is another problem when it comes to diabetes complications. According to diabetes statistics, about 44% of the cases of kidney failures in the country are caused by diabetes. At present, there are thousands of people all over the country that are being treated for end-stage kidney problems which is a result of diabetes complications. Experts feared that with the ever increasing number of people in the country who are suffering from diabetes, we will see more cases of kidney failure in the near future. What is really very alarming about this situation is that we are seeing more and more children being admitted and treated in hospitals for this type of diseases each year.
