Taking a diabetes test can be a necessary evil especially during current trends of overeating and obesity. The best way to test for type 2 diabetes is a blood sugar test called the fasting plasma glucose test. This involves taking a blood sample in order to test its blood sugar levels. Patients usually fast for a period of time so that their blood sugar levels are not abnormally affected by food or beverages. This test is not always effective as it only measures the levels of sugar in the blood at a certain period of time. A hemoglobin A1c test can be even more accurate as it measures blood sugar levels over a continued period of time.
Taking an oral glucose tolerance test involves fasting for a certain amount of time before the blood sugars are tested. The patient is then given a high glucose drink before being tested again to ascertain how their body adjusts to a high influx of glucose. This test can provide a doctor with enough information to diagnose a patient with any variety of diabetes or pre-diabetes.
When to Test for Diabetes
Diabetes can often have little or no symptoms until it has significantly advanced. Symptoms usually include frequent thirst, a dry mouth and excessive urination. These symptoms can often be caused by a number of other conditions therefore it can be left too late for prevention. Early diagnosis could be a way of stalling the process and the condition from developing. A diabetes test should be taken if symptoms are persistently experienced or if a person suspects that they may be susceptible to the disease. A diabetes test can be a good idea for those who are over weight or eat a lot of junk food in particular.
A doctor can advise their patients to undertake a diabetes test if they suspect that the condition may be behind their ill health or if they are concerned that the patient may be at risk from diabetes. The patients themselves can ask for a diabetes test if they are experiencing symptoms or if they feel that they may have already developed diabetes or pre-diabetes. Awareness of what causes diabetes and how to prevent it can go a long way towards maintaining good health in the case of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, type 1 diabetes cannot be avoided and gestational diabetes is often unavoidable.
